FAQs
What is academic coaching?
Academic coaching is a one-on-one support service aimed at helping students improve their academic performance and develop essential skills for success in their educational pursuits. It involves a collaborative relationship between the coach and the student, focusing on setting goals, enhancing study habits, and addressing any academic challenges the student may face. Most often, I am helping students with time management, stress management, study habits, and ongoing organization. I also provide accountability and serve the role of an objective and outside expert who students can report to and rely on. Coaching is highly individualized and tailored to your particular needs and challenges.
How is coaching different from tutoring?
Coaching and tutoring certainly have many similarities, and I will bring my expertise in both to either context. However, the easiest distinction is this: tutoring tends to be subject-specific and aims to help students understand particular material. We are looking closely at the material and trying to identify specific areas of weakness or misunderstanding. It relies heavily on instruction and a close examination of the content. Students are often seeking my help with specific assignments and have defined goals related to subjects (wanting to pass an English course, do well on a specific exam, memorize certain content, etc). Coaching tends to be more comprehensive and nurtures skills that will help students manage and organize all subjects.
Can I do both coaching and tutoring?
Yes, many families believe that a combination of coaching and tutoring will be most beneficial to the student. In these cases, we will do a mix of general academic coaching and incorporate subject-based tutoring as needed. There is no exact formula; every family requires something different. Please reach out to begin brainstorming what is best for you/your student.
I am looking for an editor rather than a tutor or coach. Do you offer that service?
Yes. As an experienced English professor, I have reviewed and edited writing projects of all sizes and styles. I have also officially served as an editor for various academic books and numerous self-published projects (mainly fiction and personal memoir). I would be happy to edit your manuscript!
Is coaching like therapy?
While both academic coaching and therapy provide personalized support aimed at helping individuals improve their lives, they are not the same. Academic coaching focuses on enhancing academic performance and developing educational skills, whereas therapy addresses mental health issues and emotional well-being. The practitioners, methods, and outcomes of each are distinct, reflecting their different roles in supporting individuals. While I can build a curriculum that best suits different learning styles and challenges, academic coaches cannot provide a diagnosis or offer formal therapeutic intervention.
Do you offer in-person tutoring and coaching?
Currently, all tutoring and coaching services are offered via Zoom. I have taught many virtual classes (long before the pandemic!) and I do my best to ensure that students stay engaged throughout our 1:1 sessions. If you have concerns about your student’s ability to succeed in a virtual format, please reach out so we can discuss different approaches that will help!
Do you support homeschooling families?
Yes, I support homeschooling families! As a former homeschooler myself (7th-12th grade), I understand the unique opportunities and challenges that homeschooling presents. I offer ongoing general tutoring to help students excel in their studies and provide tailored support to assist with the homeschooling process. Whether you need help with specific subjects, developing effective study habits, or overall help managing a curriculum, I am here to support your family's educational journey.
How long do people seek tutoring or coaching services?
Again, this is highly individualized and unique to you/your family’s needs. Some students will need assistance only for a limited time, requiring help with something that has a clear conclusion (getting into college, passing an exam, passing a difficult course, help with a major writing project, etc), but other families (especially homeschooling families or ESL clients) will require more ongoing support. I have clients who I have worked with for a couple months, others who I have instructed for many years, and some who only contact me on an as-needed basis. There is no expiration date or required amount of time for tutoring/coaching, though I will always be honest with you about what timeframe I believe offers the greatest chance of success.
Are higher grades or test scores a guarantee?
I am committed to providing high-quality academic coaching and tutoring services to help you achieve your educational goals, and I have an excellent record of helping students succeed. However, academic success also depends on various factors, including the student's effort, commitment, engagement with the material, and support from family. I cannot guarantee a specific grade or score on an exam. Sessions are nonrefundable, regardless of the outcome.
